Tucked away in the Rudraprayag district, the Kalishila Trek is not just a viewpoint — it is one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peeths where legend says Goddess Durga took the form of Kali to defeat the demons Shumbh, Nishumbh, and Raktabeej. The Mansoon to Kalimath loop offers a gradual, immersive alternative to the steep staircase from Kalimath — two days through rhododendron forests, alpine bugyals, and a night under the stars on the high ridge.

The 2-day trek route

Mansoon Village to Kalishila Summit

~7–8 km · 5–6 hours. Ascend through dense oak and rhododendron forests, then open alpine meadows (bugyals). A steep final ridge climb leads to the striking Kalishila rock pillar. Camp at the ridge to watch Kedarnath, Chaukhamba & Madmaheshwar peaks turn gold at sunset.

Kalishila Sunrise & Descent to Kalimath

~8 km · 4–5 hours. Catch sunrise over the Garhwal Himalayas from the ridge. Climb final rocky steps to Kalishila Temple on the cliff face, then descend the steep pilgrim trail through pristine forests to the Saraswati River at ancient Kalimath Temple.

The Kalishila Rock Peak

A massive, isolated rock monolith cutting into the sky with a tiny Goddess Kali temple anchored to its cliff face. Local folklore says the rock contains 64 sacred Yantras used by the gods.

The Ancient Kalimath Temple

One of the 51 sacred Shakti Peeths at 1,463 m. Unusually, there are no idols — devotees worship a sacred silver Sri Yantra plate covering the spot where Goddess Kali entered the earth.

Is the Kalishila trek safe for beginners?

Yes, with a decent baseline of physical fitness. The Mansoon route is more gradual than the staircase from Kalimath, but the final ridge walk to Kalishila requires careful footing.

Can we do this trek in winter?

During peak winter (Dec–Feb), the trail receives heavy snowfall making the ridge slippery and dangerous. Stick to spring, summer, and autumn months.

Are there water sources on the trail?

Streams are available in the forest sections of the Mansoon trail, but water is scarce at the high ridge. Carry plenty of water from the base.
